Baptism is the sign of faith in and commitment to Jesus Christ and being part of Christ’s body, the worldwide church. Baptism is a serious, as well as a joyful occasion because of the promises and commitments that are made. For example, the service contains the following responses:
Do you reject the devil and all rebellion against God?
I reject them.
Do you renounce the deceit and corruption of evil?
I renounce them.
Do you repent of the sins that separate us from God and neighbour?
I repent of them.
Do you turn to Christ as Saviour?
I turn to Christ.
Do you submit to Christ as Lord?
I submit to Christ.
Do you come to Christ, the way, the truth and the life?
I come to Christ.
Having your child baptised
When a child is brought for baptism, the promises and commitments are made by parents and godparents on behalf of the children, on the understanding that the child is brought up in the Christian faith at home and within the local church. For both adults and the parents of children being baptised, there is a period of preparation before the baptism, to enable those involved to understand more fully the words spoken and the promises made.
If you are interested in baptism for yourself or a child, please meet us at one of our morning services, and we will be pleased to speak to you and give you a leaflet explaining more fully the meaning of baptism and the preparation for it.
For parents who wish to have a special service for their child, but feel unable to make the commitments involved, we also offer a service of thanksgiving and blessing. Again, please come along on a Sunday, and we would be delighted to tell you more.
Baptism for adults
If you would like to be baptized please talk to one of the clergy for more information. St John’s has a baptism pool and we can baptize adults by full immersion.
